project   tuna house
location   topanga canyon
type    single-family residence
scope Open Mode has been lucky enough to work on this home through two owners of the property and we have loved this house, landscape, views and location since our first site visit. The mid-century ranch hadn’t been updated since it was built in the 1959. Given the high fire zone and the current climactic conditions it was time to update the home to current fire codes and unify its ad hoc growth to a simplified and more energy efficient structure. We removed all wood siding and replaced it with smooth stucco and modified the roof pitch to allow for enclosure of insulation and mechanical ducts. A new light-weight concrete tile class A roof with enclosed eaves to protect against ember intrusion was specified to blend in with the colors of the native palette. The existing brick fireplace remains as a central focal point and gathering place.

Future project phases include a new pool and covered parking to blend in with the surrounding landscape.
